BSNL might take a Different Approach In Its “indigenous 5G”

The Government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) might take a different approach when it comes to providing fixed wireless access (FWA) services in India. Currently, the private telecos, i.e., Airtel & Jio, are providing their fixed wireless access services through a physical SIM card by network authentication through a nearby cell tower.
As per the reports, BSNL might take a different route when it comes to providing 5G FWA service. The service will work on device-level identification rather than relying on the physical SIM verification. It seems more reliable, as it simplifies the deployment and activation process when using 5G infrastructure. The teleco has named it as “BSNL Q(Quantum)-5G and its base plan starts from Rs 1000 per month (excluding taxes).
BSNL Q-5G FWA Service: How It Works
The ‘BSNL Q-5G FWA Service’ is the first to provide connectivity without a physical SIM. Unlike the private telecos service, such as Airtel AirFiber and Jio AirFiber, it provides users with the CPE, i.e., customer premises equipment, which further requires a physical 5G-enabled SIM to work properly.
BSNL uses the D2D (direct to device) connectivity, which is somewhat similar to the existing B4S service(renamed as BSNL Airfiber service) with some technological advancements. The new tech hardware automatically authenticates itself with the network using device-level identification and cloud computing. Using this BSNL bypasses the existing system, where users are required to have a physical SIM card in order to get a FWA connection.
BSNL had earlier revealed that it would launch its much-awaited 5G FWA service in multiple cities, such as Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior, and Chandigarh by September 2025. As per the rumors, the introductory plan will start from Rs 999 offering the 100 Mbps plan, and another plan comes with Rs 1499 while providing 300 Mbps of speed. However, no update has been provided about its potential launch for PAN India.
